Transport & Operations Commercial Driving Apprenticeship open for registration

The Transport & Operations Commercial Driving Apprenticeship is now open for September 2023 Registrations.

The two-year, Level 6 course has been developed as an apprenticeship route into the commercial driving and logistics sector, in response to challenges and changes within the sector.

This apprenticeship is based on a collaboration between ATU Sligo (Co Ordinating Provider) & the Freight Transport Association Ireland (lead proposer) informed by the Consortium Steering Group.

It meets the statutory requirements of apprenticeship, in partnership with SOLAS, the Higher Education Authority (HEA), employers, FTAI and apprentices.

The purpose of the programme is to address the staffing and skills shortage of vehicle operatives/commercial drivers in the transport industry by having an apprenticeship route into this occupation.

The objective of the programme is to acknowledge and recognise the changing role of the occupation of Commercial Driver and to ensure that they will have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to carry out the core tasks and responsibilities of their role.

There is a need to change the perception of the occupation of the commercial driver and the provision of an apprenticeship entry route, with progression opportunities, will be beneficial in this regard.
