Irish hauliers need clear answers on how the extension of the Road Transporters Support Scheme (RTSS) will operate following its announcement in Budget 2027.
While the commitment to additional support offers welcome relief, important details remain up in the air, including individual payment amounts, application requirements and when operators will receive the money.
The Government has confirmed a two-month extension this year, with €73 million allocated to the measure. Despite being announced in Budget 2027, the commitment is for additional support in 2026, rather than a scheme running throughout next year.
The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has welcomed the announcement and says the additional two-month payment to hauliers is to be made before Christmas. However, a precise payment date has yet to be identified in the information reviewed by HGVIreland.com.
Operators need practical answers
As of Wednesday, 7 October, HGVIreland.com has not identified published operational guidance setting out the full arrangements for the extension.
A central question is whether operators already approved under the original scheme will receive the additional support automatically, or whether they will need to submit another application or updated documentation.
Clarity is also needed on whether applications will reopen for operators who missed the original application window, and how businesses with outstanding applications or appeals will be treated.
The Department needs to confirm the payment rates, the vehicle bands that will apply, which two months the support covers and whether any diesel-price condition will be attached.
Until those details are available, operators cannot confidently calculate their entitlement or include a firm payment date in their cash-flow forecasts.
Certainty matters for cash flow
For a haulage business, the practical value of support depends on both the amount received and its timing.
Fuel bills, wages, insurance and vehicle repayments continue to fall due while operators wait for confirmation. A commitment to payment before Christmas provides a broad timeframe, but businesses need greater certainty to plan their finances over the coming weeks.
Smaller operators in particular need to know whether further action is required to secure the payment. Prompt guidance would help prevent missed deadlines, incomplete submissions and avoidable delays.
The extension must also explain the position of applicants whose original claims have not yet been resolved. Those businesses need to understand whether approval of their existing application will determine access to the additional support.
Department must publish the terms
The Budget announcement is a positive step, but it now needs to be followed by clear instructions from the Department of Transport.
A published timetable, confirmed payment rates and straightforward guidance for existing and prospective applicants would allow hauliers to assess what the extension means for their businesses.
Operators need to know how much support they can expect, what they must do to receive it and when it will reach their accounts. Those are the details that will turn the Budget commitment into usable financial relief.
