Deal for hauliers edges closer as Cabinet set to meet

There is cautious optimism amongst hauliers that a deal on reducing the cost diesel is close and will be concluded today.

A Cabinet meeting has been called as the Government prepares to sign off on measures it hopes will bring protests over fuel costs to an end.

It is understood that direct support for hauliers similar to the arrangements that were  in place during the Covid-19 pandemic could be be signed off by Cabinet today.

An extension of the diesel rebate scheme beyond June is also a likely gain for hauliers.

HGVIreland.com understands there will also be supports for the Agri and fishing sectors.

Negotiations with the European Commission continue on further cuts to excise duty on diesel and home heating oil.
