22 years after Austria and Italy committed to building the Brenner Base Tunnel and 18 years after the EU committed to co-financing its construction, we have a breakthrough.
EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas was joined by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Chancellor Christian Stocker and Ministers for Transport Matteo Salvini and Peter Hanke at the opening ceremony in Austria this week
An outstanding example of EU cooperation and innovation, the Brenner Base Tunnel is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects and will be the first 21st century cross-border railway tunnel in the EU and the longest cross-border tunnel in the world.
It is also a key building block of the trans-European transport network & the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor, and will allow the transport of faster, heavier and longer freight trains and better connections for passengers upon its completion in 2032.
