Smart Tachograph Version 2 units must be fitted to new trucks first registered since August 2023 and retrofitted to vehicles operating internationally.
Trucks registered between 14th June 2019 and 31st December 2024, that were fitted with an analogue or digital non-smart tachograph had until the end of February 2025 top update their tachographs.
Now the focus has moved to trucks equipped with a Smart Tachograph Version 1 unit, with a date of first registration between 15th June 2019 and 20th August 2023.
Operators with trucks in this category have until 18th August 2025, to update their tachographs to a Version 2 model.
Vehicles operating internationally include those travelling to, through or from the United Kingdom (this includes Northern Ireland) and are, unless undertaking a transit journey with no loading/unloading activity, required to comply with the tachograph installation requirements from the specified dates above.
A risk of long waiting times
Many vehicles in Ireland will need to be retrofitted with a Smart Tachograph Version 2 unit so the Road Safety Authority is encouraging all affected operators to book their vehicles in as soon as possible.

who can carry out the installation and associated calibration.
If too many operators wait until closer to the August deadline, there could be long waiting times and your vehicle may not be ready in time. Anyone driving in cross-border transport logistics without a Smart Tachograph Version 2 from the dates specified above, risks a penalty or fine .
