Hauliers and drivers travelling between Ireland and Britain are being urged to check their travel documents before heading to the port, following a change to identification requirements taking effect today, Monday 28 September.

The new requirement covers Irish Ferries services between Dublin and Holyhead and between Rosslare and Pembroke, as well as Stena Line services between Dublin and Holyhead and between Rosslare and Fishguard.

Passengers on the affected routes are being told to carry a valid passport or, where accepted for their journey, an Irish passport card. A driving licence alone should no longer be relied on as identification for check-in.

For haulage operators, the practical step is to confirm that each driver has the documents required for both the outward and return sailing before dispatch. Requirements can depend on a traveller’s nationality and destination.

Drivers should check the latest guidance directly with Irish Ferries or Stena Line before travelling. Stena Line’s guidance flags the change from 28 September, while some operator guidance still displays broader lists of accepted ID; checking the specific booking and route is therefore especially important.
