RSA reports early progress in reducing driving test waiting times

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has today reported encouraging early progress under its Action Plan to alleviate the waiting times for driving tests — progress made possible by the dedication and collaboration of RSA staff and driver testers across the country.

As of 31 May 2025, the average national waiting time for a driving test stands at 20.6 weeks, down from a projected 22 weeks for the same period. The week prior saw average waiting times at 21.4 weeks, significantly ahead of the forecasted 25 weeks.
This improvement reflects the pace and focus with which the RSA and its teams have been implementing the targeted measures outlined in the Action Plan, launched in recent weeks in the context of an average wait time of 27 weeks (end of April).
Brendan Walsh, Chief Operations Officer with the RSA said: “While there is still a considerable journey ahead to get to the 10 week SLA by September, we are encouraged by the early indicators of progress. These improvements would not have been possible without the continued support and flexibility of our driver testers, administrative staff, and the wider RSA team. We are especially grateful to those who volunteered to work additional hours over the recent bank holiday weekend, during which more than 700 tests were scheduled.”
