More than 900 motorists were caught speeding in a 24 hour period, during National #Slowdown Day, which took place on Monday, 1st September 2025.
Throughout the day, members of An Garda Síochána, along with GoSafe Mobile and Static Safety Cameras, detected a total of 920 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
Examples of high speeds detected include:
• 144km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N55 at Kilcogy, Co. Cavan
• 118km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R313 at Béal an Mhuirthead, Co. Mayo
• 104km/h in a 60km/h zone on the L7081 at Kilmeague, Co. Kildare
• 117km/h in a 50km/h zone on the N22 at Farranfore, Co. Kerry
An Garda Síochána, with is road safety partner GoSafe, carries out speed enforcement on a daily basis and also conducts a number of high-profile National #SlowDown Days every year.
The aim of National #SlowDown Days is to remind motorists of the serious risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed, promote greater compliance with speed limits and support efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviours.
The aim of yesterday’s initiative was to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide, coinciding with the first full week of schools reopening across the country.
