Government looks at suite of measures to protect haulage and food production sectors

Government is looking at a suite of measures to protect the haulage industry and food production sectors, An Taoiseach, Micheal Martin has confirmed.

Speaking this morning An Taoiseach said that the Government is looking at measures for the haulage industry and the food production sectors.

“We’re trying to look at an effective way to make sure that industry can keep going, and that involves food production, in particular, and it involves haulage,” he said.

“They are not simplistic solutions either.”Reducing taxation on their own in the midst of a crisis, while it can help, doesn’t guarantee you, given the severity of the crisis, that they can be overtaken in due course.

“In the last couple of days it came down, as a result of the announcement of the ceasefire. It’s now in some doubt as a result of what transpired in Lebanon. This is a very volatile situation.

“The uncertainty of it has created a degree of caution on the Government side because we have to make sure we have enough in reserve for what may come around the corner. We hope the worst doesn’t come and we can navigate our way through this, as we navigated our way through Covid and the last energy crisis.”
