New Mercedes-Benz Actros camera feature could soon ease motorists’ fears

0

When technology introduced in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck trickles down into passenger cars, as inevitably it will, motorists trapped in a traffic queue can say goodbye to the fear that cyclists and bikers, when weaving a path to the front, will pass by without brushing into a wing mirror and bending it in a direction it was not made to go.
In the new Actros – to be launched in Ireland later this year – the traditional side-mounted, wing mirror has become a thing of the past, replaced by MirrorCam, a new invention that uses two cameras mounted on the pillars of the truck that project the view along both sides of the vehicle on to two screens fixed on the dashboard within easy and constant sight of the driver.

Working in tandem with another new system to improve all-around visibility, the cameras are said to offer better protection for pedestrian and cyclists by minimising the probability of dangerous accidents on the co-driver side during cornering or when changing lanes.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the new camera operated system brings ‘enormous improvements’ in safety, vehicle handling and aerodynamics whilst offering better protection to pedestrian and cyclists minimising the possibility of dangerous accidents.  Special distance lines are said to help drivers to better estimate following traffic and in manoeuvring, cornering or changing lanes.
