Momentum training places available

An Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore together with Minister for Education & Skills Ruairi Quinn has  unveiled the new “Momentum” training scheme, a €20 million training fund backed by the European Social Fund (ESF) which will create 6,500 training places in various sectors. The training is fully funded and courses are either full or part time. To qualify for Momentum courses learners must be long term unemployed, i.e. on the live register for over 12 months.

Through a competitive tendering process over 300 courses were proposed with less than 30% of that figure actually receiving funding. The courses approved are all innovative programmes which have been proven to develop the skills of learners with qualifications which are currently in demand. The Swilly Group worked with some of Ireland’s leading Transport & Export companies to develop the only transport industry related course.

The Export & Transport Manager course is designed primarily to up-skill unemployed transport sector workers, such as truck and bus drivers, with a core set of skills which would allow them move into managerial positions within their own industry. Funding has been approved for 80 places spread over 4 courses. The Swilly Group has scheduled courses to run in Donegal, Dublin and Dundalk.

The qualifications received will be FETAC awards where applicable. The course will include a significant work experience element where learners will serve a placement within a transport or export company to augment the knowledge they will gain in the classroom. This element will lead to a FETAC Level 4 award in work experience. Given that Momentum training is aimed at the long term unemployed it should be somewhat reassuring for prospective learners that they may retain their existing social welfare benefits while attending the course.

Brian Sweeney, Managing Director at The Swilly Group had this to say, “We are delighted to secure this opportunity for unemployed transport sector workers. This is a second chance for many and indeed gives them the opportunity to progress a career within any professional transport or export operation”. He went on to say, “The fact there is only 80 places means demand is sure to be high but anyone interested should get in touch immediately to find out how and where to apply”.
