Schmitz Cargobull adds new rigid box

December 9, 2009

Schmitz Cargobull has added the MKO Rigid refrigerated box vehicle to the range of vehicles that it builds in the UK for the UK and Irish markets.

Offered in 14, 18 and 26 tonne versions, the MKO Rigid has been designed to meet the needs of grocery retailers who require a vehicle capable of servicing smaller high street of rural outlets where space in or around the delivery bay is restricted .

Significantly, the MKO Rigid’s modular sub-frame mounting has full manufacturers approval which means that not only is it compatible with all makes of chassis but, that the kind of chassis and sub-frame cracking problems often associated with this type of product have been eliminated.

Schmitz Cargobull believes it is the only UK-based trailer manufacture to have been granted full manufacturers approval from chassis manufacturers for its sub-frame mounting.

Made from high strength steel, the sub-frame is light in weight (some 20 per cent lighter than competitive models currently on the market) but is reinforced at high stress points. It is mounted via a set of Schmitz Cargobull-designed mounting brackets which provide flexibility and rigidity at strategic points down the length of the chassis. This mounting arrangement comes with full approval from all of the leading chassis manufacturers.

The box unit itself has a sealed aluminium floor while it’s side and roof are made from Schmitz Cargobull’s FERROPLAST® modular steel-skinned panels to keep loads at the desired temperature.

All refrigeration pipe work is incorporated within the roof of the vehicle which improves insulation efficiency considerably.

The floor is designed to allow roll cages to be removed from the vehicle with minimal noise. With many retailers under growing social and legislative pressure to limit noise pollution when delivering to outlets located in built-up areas, this feature is likely to be particularly well received.

The MKO is available in lengths of up to 8.7 metres and a range of heights – although 2.5 metres is expected to be the most frequently specified internal height.

The MKO can be supplied as a dual temperature vehicle if required and is offered with a range of options such as longitudinal dividers, side doors, tail lifts etc to suit the user’s specific requirements.

Paul Avery, Schmitz Cargobull (UK) Ltd’s General Manager – Operations, comments: “A two year extensive design and testing programme was carried out in configuration with chassis manufacturers to ensure there are no structural failures of the sub-frame or chassis.”

All fabrication and assembly work will take place at Schmitz Cargobull’s state-of-the-art factory in County Durham.
