Four out of 10 truck movements in Ireland last year entailed a journey of less
than 25 kms, figures released by the Central Statistics Office confirm.
In 2009, almost 40 per cent of the total weight of goods carried was transporte on journeys of 25 kms or less.
Some 40 per cent of total vehicle kilometres were travelled on these short journeys, but they accounted for only 7 per cent of total tonne-kilometres.
Journeys of 151 kms or over accounted for 59 per cent of activity in terms of tonne-kilometres and 37 per cent of vehicle kilometres travelled, but only 16 per cent of the total weight of goods carried.
