Gardai are continuing to crack down on motorists who persist in texting or talking on their mobile phones while driving, with more than 40 per cent of the penalty points handed out in July related to the offence.
To date some 75,040 drivers have now received points for driving while texting or talking on a phone, since the offence was introduced on May 1.
Gardai have confirmed that on average 75 motorists were caught texting or talking on the mobile while driving, every day during the month of July, despite the fact that the offence comes with the threat €2,000 in fines and four penalty points.
