Great tips to lower your HGV insurance premiums

August 22, 2011

If you are getting ready to renew your HGV insurance, here are a few great tips, from insurance provider Staveley Head, which could help reduce your premium.

When you’re heading online to get a HGV insurance policy from Staveley Head or another provider of cover, you must ensure that you have lowered the possible premiums as much as possible before putting in your details. After all, there are quite a few things worth bearing in mind before making the investment, which may be more expensive if you don’t consider your options fully.

Factors that everyone will know affects their truck insurance premiums are driving records, age of the van, age of the driver, commodities carried in the HGV, the location of the driver and the areas of its operation. However, these can’t really change. Other things are definitely worth bearing in mind, though.

For instance, a well-maintained truck leads to lower insurance premiums. To be sure, it may even be worth getting the truck professionally inspected to make sure it will pass all tests with flying colours. Consider additional driving training, too; many courses specialise in the driving of such vehicles, while a range of organisations run Pass Plus-style tests that are designed to lower premiums.

Keep your work and driving records carefully and give honest answers to all questions when brokering a deal. From here, be sure to put together a financial plan and pay the maximum possible deductible, as this will lower the overall premium. Look online for any offers and discounts, and be sure to buy directly; insurance bought online is more cost effective as it avoids middlemen like agents. Read the small print of any deal in case you are not covered for one thing or another, as it may be a big shock if you do get round to claiming.

Obviously, it is very much worth checking the credentials of the insurance company, such as the number of years of experience they have in the HGV business, as well as their financial standing. Be sure that truck insurance offered by them covers primary liability coverage, physical damage and cargo.

Don’t short-change yourself by getting the cheapest policy – after all, everything comes at a price. You may never realise just how much you could save in the long run!
